Amethyst Geode

The Amethyst Geode is a hollow underground sphere lined with amethyst that regrows its own crystals. It generates throughout the Overworld with no biome requirement, which makes the Amethyst Geode moderately uncommon to come across as you explore.

Height-wise the Amethyst Geode sits in the Y -64 to Y 30 band, which narrows down where to look. Geodes generate underground across every Overworld biome between the world floor and the low surface. They are not a chest structure - they are a three-shelled mineral pocket - and you locate them by ear, since amethyst chimes when you walk past or break it.

Added back in Minecraft 1.17, its most recognisable trait is captured in one line: spherical structure with three layers.

On Java Edition the quickest method is the command /locate structure minecraft:amethyst_geode, which prints the coordinates of the nearest Amethyst Geode and the distance to it.

Without commands, explore the Overworld freely, since the Amethyst Geode has no biome requirement, and search the Y -64 to 30 band. Because it is moderately uncommon, plan on a moderate trek before you stumble onto a Amethyst Geode.

Use /locate structure minecraft:amethyst_geode. Found underground between Y -64 and Y 30. Listen for the chiming sounds of amethyst. Look for smooth basalt shells while mining.

Once inside, there is no chest. The 'loot' is the amethyst itself: break clusters for shards, harvest blocks and budding amethyst's surrounding calcite and smooth basalt, and let budding amethyst regrow new clusters indefinitely.

Some rewards here are guaranteed every time: Amethyst Shard (4), Amethyst Cluster (1), Amethyst Block (1), Calcite (1), and Smooth Basalt (1). Those are not random rolls - the Amethyst Geode always provides them, which is a big part of why it is worth seeking out.

What makes the Amethyst Geode genuinely worth the trip is one exclusive reward you cannot get reliably anywhere else: Budding Amethyst (cannot be collected).

The Amethyst Geode has no mobs that spawn as part of the structure itself, so the danger is environmental rather than a garrison to fight.

The specific hazards to plan around: no specific dangers besides normal underground hazards.

Three concentric shells make up a geode: an outer crust of smooth basalt, a calcite layer beneath it, and an amethyst-block core. Studded into the inner wall are budding amethyst blocks that sprout amethyst clusters through their four growth stages.

Other things you will notice as you explore: outer smooth basalt shell, middle calcite layer, and inner amethyst block core.

Budding amethyst blocks cannot be moved or collected even with Silk Touch. They slowly grow amethyst clusters over time, making geodes a renewable source of amethyst shards. Amethyst shards are used to craft spyglass, tinted glass, and calibrated sculk sensors.
