How far apart structures generate

Most structures are not scattered chunk by chunk. For each kind, Java Edition cuts the map into square regions and picks one spot in every region. The structure only appears if the biome at that spot allows it, so a region that is all the wrong biome stays empty, and two of the same kind never crowd together.

The table gives the size of those regions and the smallest gap between two structures of the same kind, in chunks of 16 blocks, taken from the game data of Java 26.2. Mineshafts and buried treasure work differently, with a small chance in every chunk, and strongholds are laid out in rings.

StructureRegionKept apart byNote
Village34 chunks (544 blocks)8 chunksAll five village styles share this grid.
Pillager Outpost32 chunks (512 blocks)8 chunksAbout one region in five, and never within 10 chunks of a village.
Desert Pyramid32 chunks (512 blocks)8 chunksDeserts only.
Jungle Pyramid32 chunks (512 blocks)8 chunksA grid of its own, the same size as the desert pyramid's.
Witch Hut32 chunks (512 blocks)8 chunksSwamps only.
Igloo32 chunks (512 blocks)8 chunksSnowy plains, snowy taigas and snowy slopes.
Woodland Mansion80 chunks (1,280 blocks)20 chunksThe largest region of any structure, and the spot leans toward the middle of it.
Ocean Monument32 chunks (512 blocks)5 chunksDeep oceans only, placed toward the middle of the region.
Ocean Ruins20 chunks (320 blocks)8 chunksCold and warm ruins share the grid.
Shipwreck24 chunks (384 blocks)4 chunksBeached wrecks share the grid with sunken ones.
Ruined Portal40 chunks (640 blocks)15 chunksThe Nether uses the same numbers.
Trail Ruins34 chunks (544 blocks)8 chunksTaigas, old growth forests and jungles.
Trial Chamber34 chunks (544 blocks)12 chunksAny Overworld biome except the deep dark.
Ancient City24 chunks (384 blocks)8 chunksOnly generates where the spot lands in the deep dark.
MineshaftEvery chunkNo gapA 0.4% chance in each chunk.
Buried TreasureEvery chunkNo gapA 1% chance in each chunk, on beaches only.
StrongholdRingsSet by the ringThe only structure with a fixed count: 128 per world.
Nether Fortress27 chunks (432 blocks)4 chunksShares one grid with bastions and wins two regions in five.
Bastion Remnant27 chunks (432 blocks)4 chunksTakes the other three in five, but never in basalt deltas.
Nether Fossil2 chunks (32 blocks)1 chunkSoul sand valleys only.
End City20 chunks (320 blocks)11 chunksPlaced toward the middle of the region.

Same seed, different edition

All of this is Java. Bedrock builds the same terrain and biomes from a seed but places structures by its own rules, so a village you found on a Java seed map is usually somewhere else in Bedrock. Strongholds show the gap best: Java has exactly 128 of them in rings around the center, while Bedrock has no fixed number and only keeps them at least 160 blocks from the center of the world.
