Stronghold

The Stronghold is an underground fortress of stone-brick corridors built around the world's only End portals. It generates throughout the Overworld with no biome requirement, which makes the Stronghold rare to come across as you explore.

Height-wise the Stronghold sits in the Y -30 to Y 0 band, which narrows down where to look. Exactly 128 strongholds exist per world, placed in concentric rings around the origin; the innermost ring holds three of them between roughly 1,280 and 2,816 blocks out. Because they are buried, the reliable way in is to throw Eyes of Ender and follow the direction they drift before tunnelling down.

It was introduced in Minecraft Beta 1.8, and the detail that defines it at a glance is simple: End portal room with silverfish spawner.

On Java Edition the quickest method is the command /locate structure minecraft:stronghold, which prints the coordinates of the nearest Stronghold and the distance to it.

Without commands, explore the Overworld freely, since the Stronghold has no biome requirement, and search the Y -30 to 0 band. Because it is rare, the journey to a Stronghold can be lengthy, so pack supplies before you set out.

Use /locate structure minecraft:stronghold. Throw Eyes of Ender in the air and follow their direction. They float toward the nearest stronghold and fall when above it. Only 128 strongholds exist per world.

Once inside, chests are scattered through the corridor, storeroom, and altar rooms rather than concentrated, and the stronghold table is a notable natural source of Ender Pearls. The real prize is the End portal frame itself in the portal room.

Among the Stronghold's randomised drops, the most common pulls are Paper at about 88%, Book at about 63%, Bread at about 34%, and Apple at about 33%. At the other end of the odds sit the jackpot items: Enchanted Book (random) at roughly 4% and Diamond at roughly 8%, so opening multiple Stronghold chests pays off over time.

Expect to face Silverfish, Zombie, Skeleton, and Creeper here, sometimes more than one at once.

The specific hazards to plan around: silverfish spawner near end portal and silverfish infested stone bricks. There is more to watch for too - dark rooms with mob spawns and getting lost in the maze-like layout - so do not rush.

A maze of stone-brick rooms - libraries lined with bookshelves, prison cells, storerooms, a fountain hall, and spiral staircases - links together with mossy and cracked brick variants. At its heart is the portal room: a lava moat, a silverfish spawner, and the twelve-slot End portal frame.

Other things you will notice as you explore: library rooms with bookshelves, stone brick construction with mossy and cracked variants, and prison cells and storage rooms.

There are exactly 128 strongholds per world, arranged in concentric rings around world origin. The first ring has 3 strongholds within 1,408-2,688 blocks. The end portal frame has 12 slots and each has a 10% chance of having an eye of ender already placed.
