Nether Fortress

The Nether Fortress is a dark nether-brick stronghold of bridges and corridors and the game's only blaze spawner host. It generates throughout the Nether with no biome requirement, which makes the Nether Fortress moderately uncommon to come across as you explore.

Vertically the Nether Fortress occupies roughly Y 30 to Y 80, which tells you the depth band to search once you are in the right area. Nether fortresses generate in long strips that run north to south, so the trick to finding a fresh one is to travel east or west until a new strip appears. They are the only structure that spawns blazes, whose rods you need for brewing and for reaching the End.

Minecraft Beta 1.9 (pre-release) brought it into the game, and its signature feature is straightforward: dark nether brick bridge network.

On Java Edition the quickest method is the command /locate structure minecraft:fortress, which prints the coordinates of the nearest Nether Fortress and the distance to it.

Without commands, explore the Nether freely, since the Nether Fortress has no biome requirement, and search the Y 30 to 80 band. Because it is moderately uncommon, expect to cover some ground between Nether Fortress sightings.

Use /locate structure minecraft:fortress. Travel east or west in the Nether (fortresses generate in north-south strips). Look for dark nether brick bridges spanning across the nether landscape. Blazes and wither skeletons indicate a fortress is near.

Once inside, chests sit in the interior corridor rooms and along the bridges, rolling the fortress table - gold, diamonds, saddles, horse armour, and the Rib armour trim. The defining rewards, though, are mob-based: blaze rods from blaze spawners and the rare wither-skeleton skull.

Among the Nether Fortress's randomised drops, the most common pulls are Gold Ingot at about 49%, Saddle at about 36%, Golden Sword at about 36%, and Golden Chestplate at about 36%. At the other end of the odds sit the jackpot items: Rib Armor Trim at roughly 7.0% and Obsidian at roughly 8%, so opening multiple Nether Fortress chests pays off over time.

What makes the Nether Fortress genuinely worth the trip is a set of exclusive rewards you cannot get reliably anywhere else - Nether Wart (soul sand farm) and Rib Armor Trim Smithing Template - so this is the place to come for them.

Expect to face Blaze, Wither Skeleton, Magma Cube, Zombie Piglin, and Skeleton here, sometimes more than one at once. Being a Nether structure, the Nether Fortress's mobs are immune to fire and lava, so neither works as a defence here.

The specific hazards to plan around: Blaze fireballs and fire damage and wither skeletons inflict Wither effect. There is more to watch for too - falls from bridges into lava, multiple hostile mobs at once, and open bridges with no railings - so do not rush.

The fortress is a lattice of open nether-brick bridges and enclosed corridors. Inside you will find blaze spawners on raised platforms, nether-wart soul-sand farms, lava-well rooms, and staircases linking levels; the exterior bridges have no railings, so a single hit near the edge can drop you into lava.

Other things you will notice as you explore: Blaze spawners on platforms, wither skeleton patrol routes, and interior corridors with nether wart farms.

Nether fortresses are essential for game progression as blaze rods are required for brewing stands and crafting eyes of ender. Wither skeleton skulls (rare drop) are needed to summon the Wither boss. Fortresses generate in strips along the north-south axis, so travel east or west to find new ones.
