Overview

The Shipwreck is a wrecked sailing ship - sunk, beached, or capsized - carrying up to three themed chests. It generates in the Overworld, across 5 biome types - Ocean, Beach, Deep Ocean, Snowy Beach, and River - which makes the Shipwreck common to come across as you explore.

Height-wise the Shipwreck sits in the Y 30 to Y 65 band, which narrows down where to look. Shipwrecks are common in every ocean and on beaches, and they generate in any orientation: upright, on their side, or fully upside-down. Beached variants poke out of the sand on the coast, letting you loot them without ever going underwater.

Added back in Minecraft 1.13, its most recognisable trait is captured in one line: wooden ship structure, partially destroyed.

How to Find It

On Java Edition you can run /locate structure minecraft:shipwreck and /locate structure minecraft:shipwreck_beached - separate commands because the Shipwreck has more than one structure variant, each with its own id.

Without commands, head for one of the Shipwreck's biomes (Ocean, Beach, Deep Ocean, Snowy Beach, and River) and search the Y 30 to 65 band. Because it is common, Shipwreck sightings are frequent, so you should not have to range very far.

Use /locate structure minecraft:shipwreck. Common in all ocean biomes and on beaches. Look for wooden structures poking above the ocean surface or visible on the sea floor. Sometimes found beached on coastlines.

Once inside, a wreck can hold up to three chests, each with its own table: a supply chest of food, a treasure chest of metals and emeralds, and a map chest that always contains a Buried Treasure Map. Not every wreck spawns all three sections.

Loot & Rewards

Some rewards here are guaranteed every time: Buried Treasure Map (1). Those are not random rolls - the Shipwreck always provides them, which is a big part of why it is worth seeking out.

Among the Shipwreck's randomised drops, the most common pulls are Suspicious Stew at about 55.0%, Paper at about 49%, Carrot at about 43%, and Potato at about 43%. At the other end of the odds sit the jackpot items: Diamond at roughly 7.0% and TNT at roughly 12%, so opening multiple Shipwreck chests pays off over time.

What makes the Shipwreck genuinely worth the trip is a set of exclusive rewards you cannot get reliably anywhere else - Coast Armor Trim Smithing Template and Buried Treasure Map - so this is the place to come for them.

Mobs & Dangers

Expect to face Drowned (nearby) inside or around the Shipwreck.

The specific hazards to plan around: drowning risk while exploring underwater wrecks and Drowned may spawn nearby.

Layout & Features

The ship is split into recognisable parts - bow, stern, and a captain's/map cabin - some of which may be missing where the hull has broken apart. The chests live in those compartments: food forward, treasure and map toward the stern, depending on which sections generated.

Other things you will notice as you explore: three possible chest locations (bow, stern, map), can generate upright, sideways, or upside-down, and different wood type variants.

Shipwrecks have three possible chests: the supply chest (food), the treasure chest (valuables), and the map chest (always contains a buried treasure map). Not all shipwrecks have all three sections. Shipwrecks on beaches are easy to find and loot without diving.

Which shipwreck chest has the buried treasure map?

The map chest, typically in the stern cabin, is the one guaranteed to hold a Buried Treasure Map. If a wreck is missing that section you will not get a map from it, so look for a wreck with an intact rear cabin when you specifically want a treasure map.
