Buried Treasure

The Buried Treasure is a single chest buried under the beach, found only by following a treasure map. It generates in the Overworld, across 3 biome types - Beach, Snowy Beach, and Stony Shore - which makes the Buried Treasure common to come across as you explore.

Vertically the Buried Treasure occupies roughly Y 60 to Y 65, which tells you the depth band to search once you are in the right area. Buried treasure generates on beaches and stony shores and is the one structure with no surface tell at all - you find it by reading a Buried Treasure Map from a shipwreck or ocean ruin. The chest always sits at chunk-local coordinate 9, 9, so the F3 screen narrows the dig fast.

Added back in Minecraft 1.13, its most recognisable trait is captured in one line: single chest buried under sand or gravel.

On Java Edition the quickest method is the command /locate structure minecraft:buried_treasure, which prints the coordinates of the nearest Buried Treasure and the distance to it.

Without commands, head for one of the Buried Treasure's biomes (Beach, Snowy Beach, and Stony Shore) and search the Y 60 to 65 band. Because it is common, Buried Treasure sightings are frequent, so you should not have to range very far.

Use /locate structure minecraft:buried_treasure. Follow a Buried Treasure Map from shipwrecks or ocean ruins. The chest is always located at chunk coordinates 9, 9 (press F3 to check). Dig straight down at the X mark on the map.

Once inside, the lone chest is the only structure in the game that guarantees a Heart of the Sea, the core ingredient of a Conduit, and it reliably carries diamonds, emeralds, iron, gold, and a Potion of Water Breathing on top.

Some rewards here are guaranteed every time: Heart of the Sea (1). Those are not random rolls - the Buried Treasure always provides them, which is a big part of why it is worth seeking out.

Among the Buried Treasure's randomised drops, the most common pulls are Cooked Cod at about 75%, Cooked Salmon at about 75%, TNT at about 62%, and Iron Ingot at about 57.0%. At the other end of the odds sit the jackpot items: Diamond at roughly 14.0% and Emerald at roughly 14.0%, so opening multiple Buried Treasure chests pays off over time.

What makes the Buried Treasure genuinely worth the trip is one exclusive reward you cannot get reliably anywhere else: Heart of the Sea.

The Buried Treasure has no mobs that spawn as part of the structure itself, so the danger is environmental rather than a garrison to fight.

The specific hazards to plan around: drowning if buried under water and can be hard to find without map.

There is no building - just one chest buried a few blocks down beneath sand, gravel, or stone at the map's X. Dig straight down at chunk-local 9, 9 (or tunnel in from the side to avoid dropping into a cave) to reach it.

Other things you will notice as you explore: located using treasure maps, always at chunk coordinate 9, 9, and covered by sand, gravel, or stone.

The Heart of the Sea is guaranteed in every buried treasure chest and is the key ingredient for crafting a Conduit. Conduits provide water breathing, night vision, and haste while in water. The chest always generates at chunk coordinate 9, 9, making it easy to find with F3.
