Ruined Portal (Overworld)

The Ruined Portal (Overworld) is a broken Nether-portal frame surrounded by scorched debris and a small loot chest. It generates throughout the Overworld with no biome requirement, which makes the Ruined Portal (Overworld) common to come across as you explore.

Vertically the Ruined Portal (Overworld) occupies roughly Y -60 to Y 100, which tells you the depth band to search once you are in the right area. Ruined portals are extremely common and generate almost anywhere in the Overworld, from open hillsides to deep inside caves, at any Y from the world floor to the surface. Each is partially built from obsidian and crying obsidian, with netherrack, magma, and sometimes gold ore scattered around it.

It was introduced in Minecraft 1.16, and the detail that defines it at a glance is simple: incomplete nether portal frame.

On Java Edition the quickest method is the command /locate structure minecraft:ruined_portal, which prints the coordinates of the nearest Ruined Portal (Overworld) and the distance to it.

Without commands, explore the Overworld freely, since the Ruined Portal (Overworld) has no biome requirement, and search the Y -60 to 100 band. Because it is common, a Ruined Portal (Overworld) crops up often enough that a short trip usually finds one.

Use /locate structure minecraft:ruined_portal. Very common throughout the overworld, both on the surface and underground. Look for netherrack patches and crying obsidian.

Once inside, a single chest near the frame uses the ruined-portal loot table, leaning heavily toward gold gear, gold ingots and nuggets, obsidian, flint and steel, and a slim shot at an Enchanted Golden Apple.

Among the Ruined Portal (Overworld)'s randomised drops, the most common pulls are Obsidian at about 46%, Flint and Steel at about 46%, Fire Charge at about 46%, and Gold Nugget at about 46%. At the other end of the odds sit the jackpot items: Enchanted Golden Apple at roughly 1% and Gold Block at roughly 7.0%, so opening multiple Ruined Portal (Overworld) chests pays off over time.

The Ruined Portal (Overworld) has no mobs that spawn as part of the structure itself, so the danger is environmental rather than a garrison to fight.

The specific hazards to plan around: magma blocks deal damage when stood on and some portals generate underground near lava.

The portal is a deliberately incomplete obsidian arch, often missing corners or leaning, mixed with crying obsidian, magma blocks, netherrack patches, and gold blocks. Larger variants add stairs and ruined brickwork; the only interior is the loot chest beside the frame.

Other things you will notice as you explore: netherrack and magma block surroundings, gold block sometimes present, and chest with nether-related loot.

Ruined portals can be completed with additional obsidian to create a working nether portal. They sometimes contain a gold block that can be mined. The portal frame often contains crying obsidian which cannot be used for portals but is needed for respawn anchors.
