End Gateway
Small bedrock frame portal. Found in the End dimension.

Overview
The End Gateway is a small bedrock portal that flings you out to the outer End islands. It generates in the End, exclusively within the The End biome, which makes the End Gateway a one-of-a-kind structure to come across as you explore.
Height-wise the End Gateway sits in the Y 65 to Y 75 band, which narrows down where to look. End gateways are not located with a command - one appears on the edge of the main End island each time you defeat the Ender Dragon, up to a maximum of twenty. The first spawns with a vertical beam of light so you can spot it after the fight.
Minecraft 1.9 brought it into the game, and its signature feature is straightforward: small bedrock frame portal.
How to Find It
There is no /locate target for the End Gateway; it is not placed by the world generator in the usual way, so the steps below are the only way to reach one.
Without commands, head for a The End biome where the End Gateway generates and search the Y 65 to 75 band. Because it is a one-of-a-kind structure, a End Gateway can sit a very long way off, so gear up for a serious trip.
Defeat the Ender Dragon to spawn an end gateway on the edge of the main end island. Each subsequent dragon respawn and defeat spawns an additional gateway (up to 20). Throw an ender pearl through the bedrock portal to teleport.
Once inside, gateways hold no loot of their own. Their value is entirely as transport: each one teleports you roughly a thousand blocks out to the End Midlands and Highlands where end cities, end ships, and chorus plants are found.
Mobs & Dangers
The End Gateway has no mobs that spawn as part of the structure itself, so the danger is environmental rather than a garrison to fight.
The specific hazards to plan around: must defeat the Ender Dragon first and teleports to potentially dangerous outer islands. There is more to watch for too - can be hard to aim ender pearl through the small portal - so do not rush.
Layout & Features
The structure is just a small bedrock frame surrounding a teleport field - no rooms, no chests, no mobs. Throwing an ender pearl into the field (or walking in) sends you across the void to the outer islands and back again on the return gateway.
Other things you will notice as you explore: generates after defeating the Ender Dragon, teleports to outer end islands, and one spawns per dragon defeat (up to 20).
End gateways are the primary way to reach the outer end islands where end cities generate. Each Ender Dragon defeat creates one gateway, up to a maximum of 20. The gateway teleports the player approximately 1,000 blocks from the main island. Throwing an ender pearl is the intended way to enter the gateway.

Frequently Asked Questions
What biome does the End Gateway generate in?
The End Gateway only generates in the The End biome, within the End, between Y 65 and Y 75.
Is the End Gateway dangerous?
There are no structure-spawned mobs, but watch out: must defeat the Ender Dragon first, and teleports to potentially dangerous outer islands.
How do I use an end gateway?
Throw an ender pearl into the small portal field inside the bedrock frame - the pearl carries you through and you take the teleport at its landing point. Aiming the pearl through the narrow opening is the tricky part; build a small funnel around it if you keep missing.
How many end gateways can spawn?
Up to twenty per world. The first appears after the initial Ender Dragon kill, and each subsequent respawn-and-defeat of the dragon adds another, each sending you to a slightly different patch of the outer End islands.
