Ruined Portal (Nether)

The Ruined Portal (Nether) is a broken portal frame on the Nether side, sharing the Overworld ruined-portal loot. It generates throughout the Nether with no biome requirement, which makes the Ruined Portal (Nether) common to come across as you explore.

Vertically the Ruined Portal (Nether) occupies roughly Y 30 to Y 100, which tells you the depth band to search once you are in the right area. The Nether-side ruined portal generates throughout the Nether dimension's biomes, built from obsidian and crying obsidian over netherrack platforms. It uses the identical loot table to its Overworld twin, so the rewards skew toward gold gear and obsidian.

Minecraft 1.16 brought it into the game, and its signature feature is straightforward: incomplete nether portal frame.

On Java Edition the quickest method is the command /locate structure minecraft:ruined_portal_nether, which prints the coordinates of the nearest Ruined Portal (Nether) and the distance to it.

Without commands, explore the Nether freely, since the Ruined Portal (Nether) has no biome requirement, and search the Y 30 to 100 band. Because it is common, you rarely have to travel far before a Ruined Portal (Nether) turns up.

Use /locate structure minecraft:ruined_portal_nether. Found throughout the Nether dimension. Look for obsidian and crying obsidian portal frames with netherrack platforms.

Once inside, a single chest by the frame rolls the same ruined-portal table as the Overworld version - gold tools and armour, ingots, nuggets, obsidian, flint and steel, and a rare Enchanted Golden Apple.

Among the Ruined Portal (Nether)'s randomised drops, the most common pulls are Obsidian at about 46%, Flint and Steel at about 46%, Fire Charge at about 46%, and Gold Nugget at about 46%. At the other end of the odds sit the jackpot items: Enchanted Golden Apple at roughly 1% and Gold Block at roughly 7.0%, so opening multiple Ruined Portal (Nether) chests pays off over time.

The Ruined Portal (Nether) has no mobs that spawn as part of the structure itself, so the danger is environmental rather than a garrison to fight.

It is a deliberately broken obsidian arch laced with crying obsidian and ringed by netherrack and magma, sometimes with a gold block embedded in the rubble. There is no enclosed space to explore beyond the chest at the frame's base.

Other things you will notice as you explore: netherrack surroundings, chest with portal-related loot, and gold blocks occasionally present.

Nether ruined portals use the same loot table as overworld ruined portals. They can be useful for obtaining obsidian to build a return portal if your original portal is destroyed or lost.
